Running head : COVARIANCE FUNCTIONS FOR EARLY GROWTH Estimates of direct and maternal covariance functions for growth of Australian beef calves from birth to weaning

چکیده

Records for birth and subsequent, monthly weights until weaning on beef calves of two breeds in a selection experiment were analysed fitting random regression models. Independent variables were orthogonal (Legendre) polynomials of age at weighing in days, and orders of polynomial fit up to 10 were considered. Analyses were carried out on a phenotypic and genetic scale, fitting sets of random regression coefficients due to animals’ direct and maternal, additive genetic and permanent environmental effects, estimating up to 145 parameters. Changes in variances due to temporary environmental effects were modelled through a variance function. Results identified similar patterns of variation for both breeds, with maternal effects considerably more important in purebred Polled Herefords than a four-breed synthetic, the so-called Wokalups. Conversely, repeatabilities were higher for the latter. For both breeds, heritabilities decreased after birth, being lowest when maternal effects were most important around 100 days of age. Estimates at birth and weaning were consistent with previous, univariate results.

Estimates of Covariance Functions for Growth of Australian Beef Cattle from a Large Set of Field Data

INTRODUCTION Random regression (RR) models for longitudinal data often require a considerable number of parameters to describe the associated covariance functions. Estimation of these parameters has proven cumbersome and subject to sampling problems. Moreover, computational restraints have limited analyses of data sets sufficiently large to supply accurate estimates. This holds especially for c...

Random regression models for estimation of covariance functions of growth in Iranian Kurdi sheep

Body weight (BW) records (n=11,659) of 4961 Kurdi sheep from 215 sires and 2085 dams were used to estimate the additive genetic, direct and maternal permanent environmental effects on growth from 1 to 300 days of age. The data were collected from 1993 to 2015 at a breeding station in North Khorasan province; Iran. Genetic parameters for growth traits were estimated using random regression test-...

Estimation of (co) variance components and genetic parameters for growth traits in Arman sheep

(Co) variance components and genetic parameters for growth traits in Arman sheep were estimated, using data collected during an 11-year period (1999-2010), by applying the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedure under univariate and bivariate animal models. The studied traits were body weight of lamb at birth (BW), body weight at 3 months of age as weaning weight (WW), body weight at 6 m...

Running head : REGRESSION ON MATERNAL PHENOTYPE Estimates of genetic parameters for weaning weight of beef cattle accounting for direct-maternal environmental covariances

Restricted Maximum Likelihood algorithm estimates of (co)variance components due to maternal effects as well as a regression on maternal phenotype were obtained for seven weaning weight data sets of Australian and New Zealand beef cattle. Fitting such regression, analyses accounted for environmental covariances between dams and their offspring. Results show a substantial, negative regression on...

Running head : Maternal Variances for Growth of Beef Cattle Variance Components due to Direct and Maternal Effects for Growth Traits of Australian Beef Cattle

Variance components for birth, weaning, yearling and final weight in Australian Hereford, Angus and Zebu Cross cattle were estimated by Restricted Maximum Likelihood. Six different animal models were fitted for each trait and breed, ranging from a simple model with animals as the only random effect to the most comprehensive model allowing for both genetic and environmental maternal effects and ...
